On the third day of giving, my law firm gave to me,
Making a difference for Mental Illness

with more focus being directed towards mental health, we are proud to have our third day of giving go towards the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA)

As the nationwide leader and champion for mental health, CMHA facilitates access to the resources people require to maintain and improve mental health and community integration, build resilience, and support recovery from mental illness.

Founded in 1918, the Canadian Mental Health Association is the most established, most extensive community mental health organization in Canada. With a presence in more than 330 communities across every province and one territory, CMHA provides advocacy, programs and resources that help to prevent mental health problems, and illnesses, support recovery and resilience, and enable all Canadians to flourish and thrive.

Dr. Clarence Hincks saw a need for this association in 1917 when working within inadequate asylums and no one helping soldiers coming home traumatized from the war. With the pubic being both apathetic and frightened of mental illness, Dr. Hincks movement was ahead of its time. Learn more about the CMHA history.

With one national office, 11 divisions in all provinces and one territory, and 75 community-based branches/regions, CMHA provide services and supports to over 1.3 million Canadians through the combined efforts of more than 5,000 staff and 11,000 volunteers.

Mental health is not only the avoidance of serious mental illness. Your mental health is affected by numerous factors from your daily life, including the stress of balancing work with your health and relationships. The CMHA offers resources to help you stay mentally fit and healthy, here are a few (please visit the CMHA website, link below, for a complete list): Anxiety Disorders, Care of the Caregiver, Children, Youth, and Anxiety, Children, Youth, and Depression, Coping with Loneliness, Depression and Bipolar Disorder, Eating Disorders, Feeling Angry, Grieving, Mental Illness in the Workplace, Mindfulness, Overdose Prevention, Phobias and Panic Disorders.

Embracing The Voice Of People With Mental Health Issues

The Canadian Mental Health Association was chosen by one of our newer staff members, our Real Estate Clerk, Crystal Liberty. This charity is close to Crystal’s heart for having parents who worked in the mental health field as well as dealing with postpartum depression that developed into larger health issues. Resources like The Canadian Mental Health Association can help those in need and give others hope. “There is still a lot of stigma plaguing mental health. It took me a while to get to where I am today and I want others to know that they are not alone and they can achieve whatever they want. They do have support, no door is closed, no back is turned. All you need to do is ask for help. Yes, that may be hard at first, but worth it in the long run.” Thank you Crystal and thank you Canadian Mental Health Association for helping Canadian help themselves.

*A donation to the Canadian Mental Health Association has been made in memory of Crystal’s mother, Denise Liberty.*
